Research Library metadata guidelines for Encoded Archival Description -- Corporate Bodies, Persons and Families

This is a reference for marking up entity description data using eac-cpf xml (attributes are not covered, but can be viewed in examples). Shown below are the four main sections in the schema. Expand the sections to view the nested elements. Many of the elements have a short description. Click to view them. [R] = repeatable.

Multiple entities are not covered in this document. For more information about the schema, visit the EAC-CPF tag library. To see encoded data, jump to examples

eac-cpf/control

Contains information about the entity record itself, such as identifier, authoring body, sources, etc.
Note: top elements must be used in the order they appear in the list below. Jump to an encoded example.

eac-cpf/cpfDescription/identity

Use to mark up authorized and variant forms of name. Elements are listed in alphabetical order and are not required to be encoded in a specific order. However, nested elements must be contained in their designated wrapper elements. Jump to an encoded example.

eac-cpf/cpfDescription/description

Contextual information about the entity. Includes biographical and historical notes, chronologies, place names, occupations, functions and other structured data can be provided here. None of the elements under <description> are required by the eac-cpf standard. Elements are listed in alphabetical order and are not required to be encoded in a specific order. However, nested elements must be contained in their designated wrapper elements. Jump to an encoded example.

eac-cpf/cpfDescription/relations

A CPF entity can act as a node in a set of relations. There are three types of relations that can be documented with an entity: 1) related CPF entities, 2) related functions, and 3) related resources. To learn more about the element's design prinicpals, see the EAC-CPF tag library. Jump to an encoded example.

        <abstract>
The Central Asiatic Expeditions took place between 1921 and 1930, and were led by Roy Chapman Andrews. Walter Granger was chief paleontologist and the second in command. With a team of up to forty scientists, drivers, and assistants, they were able to collect a vast multitude of objects for the American Museum of Natural History and make many groundbreaking discoveries such as the first dinosaur eggs. They explored throughout the Gobi Desert and cemented this area as a prime location for paleontological study.
        </abstract>
        <p>
“These expeditions went into Mongolia to explore the Gobi Desert, seek the ancestry of man, and study the natural history of the region. With the aid of a fleet of motor cars, a supporting caravan of camels and a well-organized scientific staff, the expeditions of 1922, 1923, 1925, 1928 and 1930 covered practically all of the fields of desert exploration” (1). .... The expeditions gathered astaggering body of observations, records, measurements, photographs, films, and collections as materials for the American Museum of Natural History and scientific papers in publication. They made many historic discoveries, including the first dinosaur eggs. The Expeditions were memorable as well for the use of automobiles in their work, and Andrews’ inexhaustive promotion and fundraising efforts, which included yearly speaking tours, sponsorships and even auctioning one of the dinosaur eggs.
